Death is Rude

Life they say is vanity!
The sting of death still in search!
Even the victory of the grave yet we question!
Death is inevitable (yes we know)!
Even though nobody wants to die!

Death is rude and has no respect, despite the amount of fear we have for it!
Death has the strongest influence on us (I know it is hard to admit)!
Death we have never been able to please!
Death we have never been able to cure!
Sad! Really sad!

Nobody knows how and with what to appease death!
Death can be so aggressive and yes really unforgiving!
Maybe bitter but the truth, that death knows everyone by name, house number, and color!
The strength of death is immense, its ability to diversify is topnotch!
(If this does not kill you, that will)!

You cannot run from it, it is everywhere, it comes in different forms,
We can’t even see it!
Nobody has ever heard its sound when approaching!
Death knew, yes it knew nobody will answer if it calls
(whether rudely or calmly). Hence,
It breaks into any home at any time to give them a reason to cry!

We have really tried to please death in all capacity, especially during this period
But despite all of these, death still sneaks in using another means to fulfill its purpose
Death drove us in, yet, drags the inside with us
We ran away to hide, no, it didn’t chase us (of cause it doesn’t have  to), it is that disrespectful,
Yes, death is greedy, death is never satisfied!
No wonder nobody can appease it, does it even have a price?
Some may be able to afford it, but damn! Who do we pay to?
How the hell do we have to run inside leaving all that matters to us outside,
yet, it came right after us!

COVID-19 is global, very famous and came fully prepared
But, it is just “a means to an end and not an end in itself”
Death can decide to use the littlest thing to end any life,
And not necessarily the most trending means of death!

Running from COVID-19 is taking necessary precautions but,
COVID-19 is only “a means to an end” there are several other means
to unavoidably obey the clarion call by death!
Death cannot be restricted, it cannot be bargained with!
Death cannot be predicted, it doesn’t stay in one place!

No wonder they call you a rude shock!
Death, you are rude!

Where ever, however, and at whatever point death decide
to pay us a visit, may it not be rude to us.

Commentary

The past few days have really been terrifying, frustrating and of course faintly (I can’t be the only one feeling this way, as I am not the only human with empathy on planet earth and especially in Nigeria). A lot happened, still happening and will still happen (it’s natural), we can’t help it, we can’t stop it neither can we run away from it (bitter but the truth, those are what made life up, “the tragic and the pleasant”).

Amidst all that happened, there was a particular one that moved me, really got to me that I literally dropped a tear, it was that bad, I felt it deep down, really deep. Maybe the circumstance that surrounded the incident, or the fact that it involved a young and promising youth, I honestly can’t answer still. It was so bad that I had to take some break from going back and forth on the internet.

Life they say is vanity, the sting of death we still don’t know how to search for, even the victory of the grave yet we question. More reasons we did all we could to avoid death (COVID-19) but, people from different places still died, meanwhile, COVID-19 didn’t kill some. To so many (or maybe few) COVID-19 is the death we must all run away from, but ironically, “it is just a means to an end and not an end in itself’’ (if this does not kill you, that will). Sad! Really sad!

We have really tried to please death in all capacity, especially during this period, but despite all of these, death still sneaks in using another means to fulfill its purpose. Death drove us in, yet, drags the inside with us, we ran away to hide, no, it didn’t chase us (of cause it doesn’t have to), death can decide to use the littlest thing to end any life, and not necessarily the most trending means of death at hand (COVID-19).

So many death cases (accident as recent as this morning, stray bullet, an unknown disease in Northern Nigeria and so on), but the one that caught me and triggered this write up is that of a young, talented, energetic, full of life and promising dancer (Kodak). It was the saddest thing I bumped into on the internet on that ‘fateful’ day. Nothing crossed my mind as the cause of her death actually (as it was too shocking to me to care about what it could have being that ended such a vibrant and colorful life), until I started seeing different sides of how she died. No, it wasn’t COVID-19, it wasn’t, really far from it.

Running from COVID-19 is taking necessary precautions but, COVID-19 is only “a means to an end”; there are several other means to unavoidably obey the clarion call by death! Death cannot be restricted, it cannot be bargained with! Death cannot be predicted, it doesn’t stay in one place, it is homeless and reckless.

No wonder they call you a rude shock!

Death, you are rude!

May the souls of the departed find rest!

May the affected families find solace.

May the world at large be healed

May all the health/exceptional workers be safe

So we pray.
